It’s Black History Month! Black People in European History #2

It's Black History Month! Every day I will post something that shows the deep and rich history of Black people in Europe, so no one ever again questions why Black actors should be cast in all the films, plays, and shows about European history or based on fictionalized European history like Lord of the Rings and The Witcher.

Feb 2: Sir Morien, Knight of the Round Table, hero of a 13th century Arthurian romance written in Middle Dutch. Sir Morien is the son of Sir Aglavale and a Moorish princess, and such a skilled fighter that his fight with *Sir Lancelot* is a draw. Sir Aglavale is reunited with his son and returns to Moorish lands to wed Morien’s mother and help her reclaim her lost lands. This 13th c Dutch writer saw a man they described as "Black of skin" as nobility of the highest character, and framed a marriage between a Black princess and a white Knight of the Round Table as romantic and beautiful. Bridgerton wasn’t the first, people.

This statue, which I adore, is probably St. Maurice. It's in Magdeburg, Germany and dates to the 13th century. Check out February 8 for more about St. Maurice.
