It’s Black History Month! Black People in European History #15
It's Black History Month! Every day I will post something that shows the deep and rich history of Black people in Europe, so no one ever again questions why Black actors should be cast in all the films, plays, and shows about European history or based on fictionalized European history like Lord of the Rings and The Witcher.
February 15: This incredible drinking vessel, and Black people in Ancient Greece. Ancient Greeks were well aware of Africa, and considered it a place of wealth and beauty. They referred to all Black people as "Aethiopian." There were Africans living in Greece, and many depictions of Africans in ancient Greek art, especially during the Hellenistic period (323-32 BCE). This is from an earlier period, the Late Archaic. It was made in Athens around 510-480 BCE, and is one of many figural drinking vessels from Ancient Greece. It shows two young women, one Greek and one "Aethiopian," and has written at the top on each side "Kalos ho pais"-- The boy is handsome. So whichever way he held the drinking vessel, a pretty girl was telling him he was handsome. Cast Black actors!
