It’s Black History Month! Black People in European History #8

It's Black History Month! Every day I will post something that shows the deep and rich history of Black people in Europe, so no one ever again questions why Black actors should be cast in all the films, plays, and shows about European history or based on fictionalized European history like Lord of the Rings and The Witcher.

The image is a detail of a 16th c painting by Matthias Grünewald.

February 8: St. Maurice. Born around 250, St. Maurice was a soldier in the Roman army who became the leader of the Theban Legion, commanding 1000 men, all Christians, mostly Egyptian. The unit was ordered to Gaul to help put down a revolt. When ordered to slaughter Christian civilians by Emperor Maximilian, he refused, backed by his soldiers. Maximilian wasn’t amused. St. Maurice has been a very popular saint throughout European history. There are numerous paintings and statues of him. Cast Black actors!
